Patch walks through family neighborhoods and onto Main Street, then stops when he realizes the town matches the place he has painted and imagined for years. Callie’s remembered voice echoes in his mind as he takes in the green awnings, white arches, red-brick sidewalk, gold-faced clock, and silver maples, all of which make the place feel both impossible and familiar.

Patch goes into the Moon Under Water Diner, sits in a red booth, and orders coffee. While he watches the town wake up around him, he feels disoriented and emotionally shaken by the ordinary lives around him, because the normalcy is beautiful and distant from the violence and loss marked on his own body.

A waitress named Katie notices Patch’s unsettled manner and jokes that he looks lost. When Patch admits he is searching for a house but does not really know where he is, Katie keeps talking to him instead of dismissing him. Patch then carefully describes a white house with a long tree-lined drive, green grass, glowing flower beds, shutters, a wraparound balcony, and an outside staircase.

As Patch adds detail after detail, Katie’s expression changes from amusement to recognition. When Patch finally asks if she knows the house, Katie confirms that she does. The chapter ends with Patch suddenly closer to the place and the answers he has been pursuing.
