Chapter 121
Overview
Saint confronts Dr. Tooms in prison, hoping to force the truth about the missing girl tied to Patch's life. Tooms confirms that Patch is still wandering the South in search of answers, then finally confesses something about Grace that leaves Saint physically shattered. The meeting marks a major turning point because the silence around Grace is finally broken, even if the truth is unbearable.
Summary
Saint goes to the prison after Dr. Tooms sends for her. In the stark visiting room, she sees how much he has deteriorated, but his attempt at familiarity only hardens her resolve to get answers.
Tooms says he received Saint's letters and drifts into memories of her childhood and of his destroyed house. Saint refuses the nostalgia and pushes him to explain why he wanted the meeting.
Tooms reveals that Joseph, whom Saint knows as Patch, has been writing to him. From the postmarks, Tooms believes Joseph is traveling and was recently in Baton Rouge. Saint says Joseph is still searching for the missing girl and is emotionally dying because he cannot let the past go without the truth.
When Saint names Grace and begs Tooms to show compassion, Tooms admits he cannot wash the blood from his hands. Desperate to know whether Joseph will ever stop, he asks if Patch can be made to let it go; when Saint says no, Tooms finally tells her what he knows. The revelation is so devastating that Saint runs from the room and vomits outside.
