Chapter 213
Overview
Waiting near the prison, Saint reflects on how Patch's long pursuit helped save Ashlee Miller and how close she came to finding the next lead to Grace. A news tribute to Jimmy Walters then jolts her into a violent reaction, exposing unresolved anger and the gap between public memory and what Saint knows to be true. Blackjack's quiet intervention emphasizes how isolated Saint has become as the search continues.
Summary
Saint sits in her cruiser outside the building that holds Patch, the only friend she has left. She wants to tell Patch that his pursuit helped her reach Eli Aaron in time to save Ashlee Miller, and that she came close to finding the man who could lead them to Grace, but still fell short.
As day turns to night, Saint goes to a nearby bar and orders bourbon. The setting and smell briefly calm her, and she closes her eyes as if she is back with her grandmother on the porch.
That fragile calm breaks when a television news report shows a ceremony at the Culpepper Zoo for a new enclosure dedicated in memory of Jimmy Walters. Seeing Jimmy Walters publicly honored forces Saint to confront her memory of him and her conviction that he was not a good man.
Overcome by anger, Saint throws her glass and shatters the television screen. When the bar erupts in shouts, Blackjack puts a hand on Saint's shoulder, leads her outside, recognizes that she knew Jimmy Walters, and quietly pays her bill and the damages without pressing her further.
Left outside under the night sky, Saint is still shaken by how close she has come to answers and by the public praise given to someone she knows did not deserve it. The chapter underscores both Saint's isolation and the emotional cost of the long search surrounding Patch, Eli Aaron, and Grace.
