Chapter 44
Overview
While trapped together, Patch and the hidden girl deepen their connection through a conversation about who might be searching for him. Patch's memories of Saint, Norma, Ivy, and Chief Nix expose his neglect, his gratitude for small acts of care, and his belief that he matters less than others think. The chapter ends with a key emotional shift when the girl finally reveals her name, Grace, turning her from a mystery into a more fully known ally.
Summary
In captivity, the hidden girl asks Patch whether anyone is looking for him. Patch answers that a police officer sometimes checked on him, and he remembers Chief Nix quietly helping when Ivy was too drunk to make it inside. The memory shows that Patch has long lived with neglect and has learned to hide hardship behind a pleasant front.
When the girl asks about Patch's friends, Patch focuses on Saint. He remembers Saint's intelligence, her skill with a slingshot, and the way she helped him with schoolwork without making him feel small. He also thinks of Norma's warmth and the meals and shelter Patch earned by helping around their house, revealing how deeply he values the scraps of stability their family gave him.
At the girl's urging, Patch describes Saint in detail, calling her the best part of himself. He explains Saint's painful family history: her mother died shortly after childbirth, and her father disappeared and ignored Norma's letters. The conversation makes clear that Patch sees Saint as exceptional but still believes her care for him comes from kindness or pity rather than love.
The girl challenges Patch's low opinion of himself and insists that Saint loves him. Patch, speaking with painful honesty, says that now he is gone Saint will see how little he left behind. As the girl presses close to comfort him, Patch asks for her name at last, and she finally whispers it: Grace.
