Chapter 127
Overview
Saint's return home underscores how badly her marriage has deteriorated: Jimmy is drunk, resentful, and emotionally absent, while Saint slips into the role of caretaker instead of partner. Outside, Nix becomes the person she can actually talk to, offering quiet guidance as she wrestles with guilt, the Macauley case, and her next move. The chapter shifts the focus from investigation to Saint's emotional crossroads, emphasizing that she needs to choose her own moral direction.
Summary
Saint returns home and finds Jimmy asleep on the couch in front of a muted hockey game, surrounded by empty beer bottles. Because Jimmy has left the house dirty, Saint falls back into cleaning immediately, wiping down the bathroom, washing his stained shirts, and clearing away old food and ashtrays. As Saint works, the home feels less shared than imposed, full of choices Jimmy made and unfinished tasks he has ignored.
When Jimmy wakes, he is glassy-eyed and drunk but acts as if her return should slip easily back into routine. Saint makes sandwiches for them, and their conversation stays strained and shallow. Jimmy talks about his day at the zoo and makes a jokingly pointed remark about whether Saint has "caught" her boyfriend, showing his resentment and distance rather than real intimacy.
A knock at the door brings Nix, and Saint chooses to meet him outside instead of inviting him in. Sitting together on the front step, they talk about the Macauley case and the FBI, and Saint admits there is still no news about Callie. Saint also mentions Daisy's article about the gallery and Patch's new painting, wondering whether anything good can come from so much pain; Nix answers that tragedy may produce something beautiful or clarifying, but not something good.
Nix tells Saint he has checked on Norma, who is struggling with Saint's absence. Saint, already burdened by guilt and uncertainty, admits she has made mistakes and asks how to fix things. Nix does not press her for specifics, but tells her to remember where her true north is and to do something meaningful. Before he leaves, Saint reveals that she went to see Dr. Tooms; when Nix asks what happened, Saint only smiles and says nothing, ending the chapter with her still carrying private knowledge and unresolved choices.
