Chapter 171
Overview
A new lead on the Carters gives Patch a clear path to continue his search, this time to North Dakota. After a sleepless night beside Charlotte, however, he decides that pursuing the next clue would mean sacrificing the daughter he has finally found.
By tearing up the address at dawn, Patch makes a defining choice: he stops chasing the past and chooses fatherhood. The decision marks a major turning point, because it also means accepting the loss of Grace.
Summary
In the motel room, Patch tries to make the space secure for Charlotte. He takes a blanket from the closet, places it by the door, checks that the windows are locked, and lies down near her bed, aware that his daughter should not be caught in the life he has been living.
When the phone rings, Patch answers quickly so Charlotte will not wake. A neighbor has found a forwarding address for the Carters, and Patch writes it down. He learns the family is unlisted and realizes the address would send him to North Dakota, at least eight hours away, offering him another chance to keep chasing the trail.
Instead of leaving at once, Patch stays awake through the night and reflects on his life. He thinks about the beautiful places he has seen across the country, but every memory is darkened by thoughts of missing girls and damaged survivors. Because that obsession has shaped everything he has done, Patch understands that this moment is his final crossroads.
As morning comes, Patch replays the first half of his life and reaches a different conclusion about it. What once seemed wasted has led him to Charlotte. At dawn he tears the address in half and throws it away, quietly telling his sleeping daughter that he has room for her, and in choosing her he accepts that he has found Charlotte and lost Grace.
