Chapter 248
Overview
Saint reaches the white house during a violent storm, following both the spreading police response and Patch's path. The house itself appears deserted, but Saint's attention shifts to a suspicious red barn with newer wood, suggesting the real answers may be hidden there. Her arrival brings another key witness to the center of the mystery and pushes the search toward a likely reveal.
Summary
Saint drives out of town through a storm while local police cruisers converge in growing numbers. The rain becomes so heavy that Saint stops in the middle of the road and waits, searching for a break in the chaos before continuing.
When the house finally comes into view, Saint recognizes it at once as the same house that had hung above her piano for years. The sight feels unreal to Saint, as if it might disappear, but she still pulls up to the gates, gets out, and walks the driveway in the rain without trying to protect herself.
At the house, Saint knocks on the door and then circles the building, following the path Patch took. She peers through the windows and searches for any sign of life, but the house appears empty.
Looking out across the storm-darkened land, Saint notices the barns and fixes on one red barn whose newer timber stands out. Drawn to that detail, Saint crosses the grass through thunder and lightning, reaches the barn, and gently pushes the door, moving closer to whatever the property has been hiding.
