Chapter 161
Overview
When Charlotte skips school, Patch finds her by the lake and tries to reach her as Misty's illness hangs over them. Charlotte makes clear that she knows Patch is her biological father and bluntly rejects any claim he might have on her. The chapter turns Patch's private hope for a connection into an open, painful reality and shows him choosing restraint over forcing himself into Charlotte's life.
Summary
One crisp morning, Patch answers the Meyers' phone and learns from Charlotte's school that Charlotte has not shown up. Wanting to protect Charlotte and keep the situation calm, Patch lies that Charlotte has come down with a cold, then heads into Monta Clare to find her. Patch rouses Sammy and sends Sammy to search the higher streets while Patch looks elsewhere, assuming Charlotte cannot have gone far.
Patch finds Charlotte sitting alone by the lake with a small sunflower, stripping off its leaves and floating them on the water. Patch asks to sit with Charlotte and tries to make the moment gentler by admitting that he used to skip school and come to the same place when he was young. Charlotte immediately pushes back, insisting that she did not merely cut school but chose not to go, asserting control at a moment when her life feels unstable.
The conversation shifts to Misty and then to Patch himself. Patch admits that he is scared about Charlotte's mother, but Charlotte insists that she is not scared and answers him with mockery and anger. Charlotte attacks Patch's place in Misty's life, saying Misty chose him out of pity because he was poor and neglected, and Patch does not defend himself much; instead, Patch admits that he was hard to love and that he was bad.
Charlotte then reveals the deeper conflict: Charlotte knows Patch is her father, and Charlotte rejects him completely. Charlotte says Patch will never be her father in any real sense and that Charlotte will never hold Patch's hand, hug him, or belong to him. Patch accepts the blow without argument. After Charlotte walks back toward home, Patch waits and then follows at a distance, staying close enough to protect Charlotte while respecting the boundary Charlotte has drawn.
