Chapter 225

Overview

The manhunt for Patch stalls, and the failed search throws the prison and surrounding towns into chaos while public attention intensifies. Desperate for a lead, Warden Riley questions Tug, but Tug stays in control, manipulates Riley’s frustration, and sends the authorities toward Bismarck with false information. By the end of the chapter, Tug’s private satisfaction shows that the search has been deliberately thrown off course and that Patch still has covert support.

Summary

Twenty-four hours after Patch’s escape, the search has produced nothing despite a massive effort across a hundred miles around the prison. Construction on the prison’s new wing stops, prisoners stay agitated, and guards avoid attention while local police sweep nearby towns, farms, silos, and bunkers. The chase spreads into public life as reporters gather in Monta Clare, talk about the pirate, and photograph the Mad House, which Charlotte has been carefully maintaining; Saint recognizes that Charlotte’s attachment to it is deeper than a simple investment.

By late morning, Warden Riley’s frustration boils over. He smashes his hand through a glass cabinet, berates his staff, fires a new guard and the entire construction crew, and demands to know who inside the prison was close to Patch. Riley’s anger makes clear that the failed manhunt is becoming both a political and personal humiliation for him.

Riley then has Tug brought in for questioning, blaming Tug for earlier unrest and trying to intimidate him into giving information. Tug refuses to be rattled and instead answers in riddling, controlled language that forces Riley to negotiate. Tug exploits Riley’s desperation by asking for a barber, then calmly enjoys a full grooming session in the warden’s office, turning the interrogation into a small personal victory.

Once Riley returns, Tug finally offers what appears to be useful information: Patch has a girl in Bismarck, North Dakota, and human desire will pull him there. Riley accepts the claim and orders Tug taken to solitary, apparently satisfied he now has a lead. On the way, Blackjack gives Tug a book on soap production that Cooper has arranged for him.

Inside solitary, Tug opens the book and finds a hidden June 1965 issue of Playboy. After smiling at the picture of Ursula Andress, Tug smiles again at the thought that Riley and the police are now heading a thousand miles in the wrong direction. The chapter reveals that Tug has successfully misdirected the search and is still connected to quiet help inside the prison.
