Chapter 85
Overview
Outside her birthday party, Misty turns a quiet conversation with Patch into an intimate confession. Patch admits he is still consumed by the search for the missing girl, but Misty warns that his fixation could make him miss the love standing in front of him.
The chapter deepens the emotional triangle around Patch by making Misty's feelings unmistakable. It also shows that Patch's unresolved grief and obsession still prevent him from fully stepping into a different future.
Summary
Patch arrives late to Misty's birthday party, and Misty immediately tells him she was worried he would not come. They stand together apart from the dance floor, watching other couples form as the music slows.
When Misty asks whether life will always feel this hard, Patch notices her polished, controlled family and thinks about how confined a future can feel. Patch then admits the fear driving him: he worries he will never find the girl he is still searching for. Because Patch remains fixed on that loss, he cannot fully meet Misty's attention.
Misty answers that Patch can keep looking, but warns that he may miss what is right in front of him. She suggests that what happened to Patch has made him different from everyone else and hard for others to truly know, revealing both her sympathy and her growing emotional claim on him.
As the song plays, Misty takes control of the moment. She slips off her heels, draws Patch into a slow dance on the grass, and asks whether love really can break a heart. When Patch asks what she got for her birthday, Misty finally reveals the answer: dancing with the boy who saved her life was exactly what she wanted.
