Chapter 72
Overview
In a flashback, Patch's precarious job at Sammy's gallery ends when Sammy catches him stealing expensive paper. The theft is tied to Patch's need to draw Grace, and when Sammy says he must report him, Patch's humiliation and fear for his mother turn into anger as he throws the sketches back and walks away.
Summary
That night, Patch arrives at the gallery exhausted and in pain from cleaning. While working, he notices a large art book on a glass table and becomes absorbed by an image of Ophelia floating in the water. Sammy finds him looking at it, asks whether Patch ever read Hamlet, and lightly needles him about school and his rough appearance.
The moment shifts when a slightly flushed woman comes downstairs, clutching her handbag, and leaves the gallery while a taxi waits outside. As soon as she is gone, Sammy tells Patch he will not be cleaning there again. Patch tries to explain himself, but Sammy accuses him of stealing and makes clear he has already decided what to do.
When Patch asks what he took, Sammy specifies that it was a ream of expensive paper that Patch had researched beforehand. Sammy says Patch chose something he thought would not be noticed and mentions that a local girl had described Patch as a pirate. Patch insists that Sammy was the only person he had not stolen from, but Sammy replies that he looks after his own interests and that Patch is no longer his problem.
Patch asks whether Sammy will tell the agency, and Sammy says he has to. As Patch empties his bucket, he thinks about the money that will be lost and fears the call will hurt his mother, who is too unwell to work and may lose one of their last chances. When Sammy offers a detached remark about men reaching crossroads, Patch answers with open anger, then pulls the stolen paper from his bag and throws the sheets at Sammy. The pages are covered with sketches of Grace, and Patch leaves without watching the pieces of that private memory fall.
