Saint is at her desk in the Monta Clare Police Department when Deputy Michaels patches through a call from the school. As she walks there, the narration lingers on Monta Clare's ordinary rhythms and on Saint's public image: she is respected and feared as the town's young police chief, an FBI veteran who keeps crime low, but she is never fully accepted because of her past and her connection to Jimmy Walters.

At the high school, Saint falls into a familiar routine with Mildred, the principal's secretary. The principal is new, but Charlotte's trouble is not, and Saint does not have to argue Charlotte's case because everyone already knows who Charlotte is. Saint agrees to a week's suspension.

Outside, Saint questions Charlotte about what happened. Charlotte says the boy was Noah Arnold-Smith, and Saint learns Charlotte dislocated his shoulder. When Saint tells Charlotte she should not have done that, Charlotte answers that Noah grabbed her ass and throws Saint's own training back at her by saying, "You showed me how."

Saint and Charlotte continue walking until they stop near the cemetery, where Misty's grave is visible. Saint tries to confront Charlotte about avoiding the place and about what Charlotte is carrying emotionally, while Charlotte worries whether Saint will tell her grandmother and complains about possibly losing her weekly allowance and her fantasy of escaping to Vegas. Charlotte rejects the idea that she needs the grave as a reminder of who she is disappointing, then ends the exchange with a cruel accusation that Saint only has to pretend to care for less than four more years.
