After recognizing the killer on security footage, Saint drives twenty miles out of Monta Clare to Chief Nix's rural home. The familiar landscape and the sight of the Shaw house across the street remind Saint of her past there, sharpening the emotional weight of the visit.

Saint studies the Nix property and sees that it is tidy and carefully kept, from the fresh white paint to the sanded porch and the perfect cherry tree. Despite that calm appearance, Saint draws her gun before approaching, showing that she expects danger and has come ready to confront someone she believes is involved.

When Saint notices Nix's Ford, she circles to the back and enters through an unlocked kitchen door. She searches the clean, dated house room by room, passing guest bedrooms and a den full of wildflowers. Hearing running water, Saint checks the bathroom, only to find a broken toilet seal and no one inside, which pushes her back outside to continue the search.

Saint follows the paths toward the stables and finally sees Nix carrying a shovel. Saint keeps her gun trained on him, but Nix remains calm and even smiles, telling Saint, "Just like I taught you."
