At Dr. Tooms's house, Saint is caught by Nix, who lowers his gun and helps her down. Saint insists Tooms is responsible and tears through rooms, emptying closets and drawers in a frantic search. When Nix physically stops her, Saint finally breaks down, releasing years of anger and grief over Callie's disappearance, Patch's damaged return, Patch and Misty, and Jimmy Walters.

Outside, Nix comforts Saint without offering false reassurance. He reminds her that Patch did come back and urges her to accept that victory, but Saint says she made God a promise not to sin if Patch were returned. Nix treats her seriously, tells her to keep moving forward, and mentions Dartmouth, but Saint cannot let go because she believes Grace is still out there.

When Deputy Harkness arrives, Saint pleads with both officers to imagine one more missing girl and one more devastated family. Nix resists because the house has already been searched, but Harkness remembers that, as a child, he knew of a storage cellar near the property. He, Saint, and Nix clear away a large pile of firewood until they reach the base, but Harkness stops when Nix points out they have no warrant. Convinced she has lost her last chance, Saint lets Nix lead her back to the car.

As Nix drives her away and offers to take her to prom instead, Saint thinks of Grace and Callie and decides she cannot stop. She jumps from the car, runs back, and rips away the remaining rotten boards covering the spot. The returning cruisers' headlights reveal old wooden double doors. Saint opens them and descends the shaky stairs into a hidden cellar before the officers can stop her. With Harkness shining a flashlight from above, they see a single mattress and a large amount of blood, confirming that Saint's suspicions about Tooms concealed something terrible were justified.
