Chapter 250
Overview
In the barn, Saint discovers a concealed darkroom filled with photographic chemicals and hidden images, confirming the place was used to document victims. The most devastating reveal is that one of the photographs shows Saint herself as a terrified teenager, connecting her personally to the crimes in a new way. Before Saint can act on the discovery, an unseen attacker grabs her from behind, turning the investigation into an immediate fight for survival.
Summary
Saint enters the dark barn and is hit first by a harsh chemical smell so strong that she has to cover her mouth. As her eyes adjust, Saint sees a chair, metal lockers, steel tables, a basin, trays, tongs, papers, and bottles labeled with photographic chemicals, which tells her the barn contains a darkroom rather than ordinary farm storage.
Calling softly for Patch as the storm begins to fade, Saint moves deeper inside. At the far end of the barn, Saint reaches a false wall and studies the papers there, waiting for enough light to understand what she is seeing.
When the thunder cuts out and sunlight finally breaks through the rain and open door, Saint realizes the papers are photographs. One image shows a terrified girl with tears running down her cheeks and her glasses missing, and Saint recognizes that the girl is her own teenage self.
The discovery reveals that Saint herself had been photographed and watched, tying her directly to the hidden horrors connected to the farm. Shocked, Saint draws her gun, but before she can respond further, someone grabs her from behind and clamps a hand over her mouth, stopping her scream and putting her in immediate danger.
