Chapter 253
Overview
After Eli Aaron’s defeat, Patch brings Saint into safety, and Saint realizes Patch has killed him and is ready to surrender. She confirms that Grace was the hidden survivor they had been seeking, ending a long search and shifting responsibility for Grace’s future to Saint. As troopers approach, Patch accepts that he will return to prison, and Saint’s final embrace reveals how deeply love, guilt, and loyalty have defined both of them.
Summary
Patch helps Saint out of Eli Aaron’s hidden space and into the open air after the violent confrontation. As the storm clears, Saint collapses to her knees, coughing and retching, while Patch tries to steady and comfort her. When Saint says, "You killed him," she shows that she understands Patch has ended Eli Aaron’s threat.
Saint then picks up the gun and, despite her tears, points it at Patch’s chest. Patch does not flee; instead, he turns and raises his hands in surrender, accepting what is coming. Looking past him toward the house and the barn, Saint asks him to confirm that the hidden survivor was really there, and Patch confirms it by glancing toward Grace, who has been hiding and waiting nearby. With that answer, Saint finally understands that the search is over.
Patch’s focus shifts from himself to Grace’s future, and he asks Saint to look after her. Saint promises that she will, though she bitterly reflects that she could not protect the person who mattered most. Patch tells Saint that she always does the right thing and that he loves her for it, but Saint keeps the gun trained on him and warns that the authorities are coming. As sirens draw closer, she takes out her handcuffs, and both of them understand that Patch will be taken back to prison to answer for the crime he committed.
Before the troopers arrive, Saint speaks about Patch’s escape, saying she first assumed it required money or influence, but later realized it was driven by heart and the desire to correct a wrong. Patch tries to stop her from saying more, and Saint makes clear that she will not pursue exactly who helped him, even though she can guess. Patch looks back toward Grace, accepts that this is the end, and when Saint asks if he has regrets, he answers that he has very few. They embrace as the sirens close in, and in holding Patch, Saint fully understands the value of loving and being loved.
