Chapter 29
Overview
While wandering town, Saint finds Misty Meyer’s image in an advertisement for Eli Aaron Photography and realizes Misty may connect to a larger pattern. A camera-store clerk quietly warns that Eli Aaron has a troubling reputation with girls and works for local schools, giving Saint a more concrete and potentially dangerous lead in her search.
Summary
After walking back into town with her grandmother, Saint lets her grandmother stop at a café while Saint continues on alone. Saint drifts past shop windows and briefly notices a coin Patch would have wanted, a reminder that grief still shapes how she sees the world.
Saint then enters the Central Camera Store and lingers over lenses, film gear, and camera bags. The store feels familiar and absorbing to her, and the clerk, Larry, notices Saint’s camera and offers to look at her photographs. Saint dismisses the idea that her pictures are "work" and waits while Larry rings up her film.
While standing at the counter, Saint studies a noticeboard full of advertisements and suddenly spots a poster for Eli Aaron Photography. The poster features Misty Meyer smiling shyly, which immediately jolts Saint because Misty is already tied to the violence that began this chain of events. Saint takes the poster down and confronts Larry about the man in the ad.
Larry first clumsily assumes Saint might want modeling work, then grows uneasy when Saint presses him. He admits the store has developed film for Eli Aaron and says that, although no formal complaint was ever made, he has heard enough rumors that he would not let his own daughter go near him. As Saint leaves with the poster, Larry adds one more crucial fact: Eli Aaron photographs for several local schools. That warning turns the ad into a serious lead, because it links a suspicious adult man to girls Saint’s age and to institutions with direct access to children.
