Saint helps Patch dress in clothes taken from his father’s old things. While Patch changes, Saint notices the scar on his body and reflects on how deeply his past still marks him. At the same time, Saint continues her own quiet work on the missing-girl case by writing to missing-person organizations across the country, only to realize that many of them are unofficial groups of people trying to preserve hope and share information with police.

Patch is visibly uneasy about where he is going, and Saint steadies him with teasing and practical help. She throws him a bright red bow tie, smooths back his hair with his father’s pomade, and fixes the knot for him. In this intimate moment, Patch admits that he missed Saint while he was gone, and Saint turns away so he will not see how much that confession matters to her.

They walk together toward Main Street, and Saint buys a peach bouquet with money she had saved. Patch says he does not want to do whatever lies ahead, showing his reluctance, but he goes on anyway. Saint watches him continue alone toward the large houses, signaling a small but painful separation between them.

Afterward, Saint meets Jimmy Walters, who notices her blouse and remarks that he sees less of her now that Joseph has returned. Jimmy says he prayed for Joseph’s return, and Saint says she did too. Saint also thanks Jimmy for telling Nix where she had been headed on an earlier dangerous day, because that warning helped bring help to her; Jimmy downplays his part.

Once Jimmy leaves, Saint returns to the tall house, changes into dungarees, and paints her face in camouflage colors. She goes out through the thicket with her Nikon and settles into the grass to watch the Tooms house. As Saint begins this covert surveillance, she thinks about Patch and feels that she is losing more of him every day.
