Chapter 62
Overview
Misty's awkward birthday gesture briefly interrupts Patch's isolation, but the chapter mainly shows how deeply his search for Grace has consumed him. Patch keeps making and posting vague notices across surrounding towns, relying on memory fragments that no one else can verify. Saint stays beside him through the search, yet Patch's flinch when she takes his hand shows that trauma still blocks connection even as others try to reach him.
Summary
At lunch, Patch sits alone with his map until Misty Meyer approaches with a late birthday cake she made in culinary class. The cake is badly decorated and tastes overly salty, but Misty clearly wants to be kind and to talk to him. Patch responds awkwardly and defensively, showing how isolated and emotionally raw he still is.
When Misty notices Patch's meager lunch, her attempt at joking advice about diet pills only makes his physical decline more obvious. The exchange emphasizes how thin and worn down Patch has become while he keeps obsessively searching for Grace instead of returning to a normal routine.
That afternoon, Patch steals paper from the school supply closet and makes twenty more posters. The posters stay vague, listing only basic details and Grace's name, which shows that Patch is still working from fragments, intuition, and memory rather than proof. His need to keep searching outweighs school, rules, or practicality.
After school, Saint finds Patch at the gates and quietly joins him. She boards her grandmother Norma's bus with him, and together they distribute notices through nearby towns and landmarks, from Fallow Rock to Coldwater Dam. As they travel, Patch reflects on the details he believes he knows about Grace's age, size, and appearance, piecing together a private timeline that makes sense only to him.
At a bus station, Patch and Saint stop at a noticeboard where only one photograph remains: Callie Montrose. Saint points out that even Callie's police-officer father has not found her, and Patch answers that no one found him either. Saint slips her hand into Patch's hand in comfort, but Patch flinches, revealing both his trauma and the emotional distance that still separates him from the people trying to help him.
