Chapter 31
Overview
Saint crosses a decisive line in this chapter, arming herself and setting out alone to confront Eli Aaron. Convinced he is tied to Callie’s disappearance, she abandons caution and chooses vigilante action, showing how far desperation and loyalty have pushed her.
Summary
At dawn, Saint takes a high-polish nickel Colt Python from a shoebox in the garage. The gun feels heavy in her hands, and Saint knows it holds only two bullets, with more ammunition hidden elsewhere. She also knows her grandmother would react violently if she discovered Saint had taken it.
Saint dresses in faded overalls and a white vest, with a satchel over her shoulder and a skull-and-crossbones drawn on the back of her hand. Having found Eli Aaron’s address on the poster, Saint leaves with a clear purpose. The discovery of Eli Aaron’s connection to local children has pushed Saint from suspicion into direct action.
As first light breaks, Saint walks through town toward Main Street. The police station is dark, while the church is beginning to wake for the day. When Jimmy Walters asks where she is going, Saint answers plainly that she is going to see Eli Aaron. When Jimmy asks why, Saint says she intends to shoot Eli Aaron dead and bring her friend home, revealing both her belief that Eli Aaron is responsible and her willingness to act outside the law.
