As Patch faces the zoo veterinarian, his mind briefly turns to Charlotte wearing her new necklace and tending bees, a vision that links his daughter to Saint and Saint's grandmother. That memory sharpens Patch's sense of what is at stake: the kind of world Charlotte will grow up in, and whether good people will be defended or abandoned.

Looking at Jimmy Walters, Patch reflects on how evil can hide beneath ordinary appearances. He thinks of Saint's loyalty and goodness, especially her winter search for him, her care for her grandmother, and her love for Charlotte. Remembering that Jimmy once beat Saint and told the town she had murdered his child, Patch feels the full weight of what Jimmy took from someone who only ever gave.
