Saint arrives at Misty’s birthday party feeling conspicuous and unsure. She keeps to the edge of the dance floor, leaves a hand-knitted pink sweater on the gift table, and immediately asks whether Patch is there. When Misty appears in an elegant white dress and asks the same question, Saint realizes Misty’s invitation was connected less to friendship than to Patch.

That realization humiliates Saint and exposes how deeply she fears losing him. She gives Misty a strained birthday greeting, then blurts out a plea for Misty not to take Patch. Saint admits the request sounds shameful, but she cannot stop herself; Misty seems to possess beauty, status, and attention already, while Saint feels she has little besides her bond with Patch.

Before Misty can properly answer, the moment is broken when Chuck pulls Misty onto the dance floor as the music slows. Looking through the open doors, Saint then sees Patch outside, walking away. Saint is too embarrassed and self-conscious in her dress and makeup to call after him, and she watches as Misty pushes Chuck away and heads out into the warm evening after Patch.

After Misty leaves, Jimmy approaches Saint and tells her she looks beautiful. He asks her to dance, and when Saint hesitates, Jimmy explains that when Patch was gone, he prayed not only for Patch’s safe return but also for Saint’s well-being because he cares about her. Jimmy gently shows how closely he has noticed Saint’s small habits and insecurities, then admits he knows he is not her first choice. Even so, he asks again, and Saint, still watching Misty go toward Patch, finally takes Jimmy’s hand.
