Chapter 41
Overview
As Patch lies injured in the dark, the captive girl comforts him and reveals more of the psychological damage their imprisonment has caused her. Patch notices signs of ventilation, suggesting the room is deliberately designed to keep captives alive but hidden. When the captor approaches, the girl switches to coded, performative piety, and Patch finally gives his name just as the door opens, tightening both the danger and their connection.
Summary
The captive girl gently smooths Patch’s hair and tells him about her mother singing "Over the Rainbow" in dark moments, believing the song could move God to set the world right again. While she tries to comfort him, Patch focuses on his stabbing wound and fears the metal may have left something poisonous inside him that will slowly rot him from within.
Patch says he thinks there are vents that let air into the room but no light, showing he is still trying to understand where they are and how the space works. When he asks how long she has been there and presses to know her name, the girl answers indirectly, describing their whole universe as black and suggesting that even escape would not free them from the darkness they now carry.
They hear a noise, and the girl immediately changes her behavior. She speaks loudly in Bible verses for whoever is approaching, then quietly tells Patch to pray and stay alive, revealing that she knows the captor is near and must hide what she really means.
As Patch weakly says he has to go home and then tries to identify himself, he finally tells her his name and begins to say where he was taken from. The key turns in the door, the girl takes his hand, and Patch refuses to let go, showing the sudden bond between them as danger enters the room.
