Chapter 251
Overview
Grace finally tells Patch the truth: Eli Aaron is her father, he kept control over her for years, and she secretly protected Patch during his original captivity. Her confession reshapes Patch’s understanding of the past, revealing how deeply Grace was trapped and why she believes escape will only bring more death.
The chapter also shifts the immediate stakes from reunion to confrontation. When Patch realizes Eli is nearby in the barn, the story moves from revelation to imminent danger.
Summary
Grace pulls Patch out into the rain and tries to force him away. Patch refuses to leave her again, but Grace panics and angrily insists that he go because her father has promised to kill him if Patch stays. When Patch holds his ground, Grace breaks down and begins to explain why she has been hiding and why she believes there is no safe future for them.
Grace tells Patch that she grew up in the beautiful house until her mother died, after which her father was found and took her across the country. Patch realizes, with horror, that her father is Eli Aaron. Grace explains that when Eli captured Patch years earlier, he did not kill him because Grace begged for Patch’s life and because Eli believed Patch might know too much; during Patch’s captivity, Grace secretly came to him and cared for him. She also reveals that Eli later targeted Misty after seeing her photograph in the newspaper following Jane Roe’s legal victory.
Grace explains that Patch was her only connection to something good during those years, and that in the darkness she could briefly imagine herself as someone else. She recalls watching Saint arrive at the property, hoping Saint would end everything, then seeing the fire and dragging the gravely ill Patch to safety before leaving him where the police would find him. Eli then took Grace away through routes the authorities never discovered, and she did not go to the police because she lived in terror of him and had been psychologically broken by isolation, surveillance, and repeated confinement.
Grace says that years later she saw Patch’s paintings of the house in the newspaper, and Eli saw them too. Eli warned that if Grace ever tried to escape, he would kill her and then hunt down Patch. Although Grace dreams of restoring the house and having a normal life, she insists there can be no future for them and begs Patch to leave and forget her. Patch asks where Eli is, notices Grace glance toward the barn, and moves toward it despite Grace’s screams for him to stop.
