Chapter 63
Overview
Misty keeps seeking Patch out at school, bringing him elaborate food and trying to care for the boy who saved her. Instead of comforting him, her attention deepens Patch's discomfort and collides with his unresolved trauma, especially after Saint's crude gesture triggers a memory of Grace. By the end of the chapter, Patch again chooses avoidance over normal school life, and Misty's decision to follow him suggests she is becoming part of his orbit.
Summary
The next day at school, Misty Meyer brings Patch a Le Creuset dish of arroz de pato and real silver cutlery. Patch is intimidated by the fancy food, struggles through eating it, and privately reacts with disgust and suspicion even as Misty watches him.
As they sit outside, Patch notices other students watching Misty and then sees Saint at the window of her applied math class. Saint makes a crude hand gesture, and the sight abruptly sends Patch back to a memory of Grace explaining what the gesture means, pulling his thoughts toward the basement and the trauma he is still carrying.
Misty breaks that spiral by telling Patch that he was in the newspapers a lot and that she made a scrapbook about him. She wonders if he would rather forget everything, but admits that she keeps coming to sit with him every day anyway. Patch, uncomfortable with her gratitude and attention, tells Misty that she does not have to do this and that she owes him nothing.
Misty says she enjoys the cooking, then confesses that she has barely slept and that she and her family went to church and prayed for him. Her concern only intensifies Patch's turmoil; he wants to flee from her, from the school, and even from the police station that failed to stop what happened. When the bell rings, Patch gathers his posters and walks away, cutting biology, and after a brief pause Misty follows him.
