Chapter 66
Overview
Chuck and his friends publicly target Patch by tearing down Grace posters and beating him, turning Patch’s private search into an open social conflict in town. Patch refuses to be intimidated, and Misty unexpectedly takes his side, physically stopping the attack and then helping him put the posters back up. The chapter strengthens Misty’s connection to Patch while showing how isolated, stubborn, and visible his search for Grace has become.
Summary
Outside the bakery, Patch smells fresh bread and notices Chuck leading a group up Main Street, tearing down the posters Patch has put up. Patch steps into the road and calls them gutless, forcing the boys to stop and turn back. Chuck mocks the posters and calls Grace a made-up girlfriend, while Patch notices Sammy watching from the art store and thinks again of Grace and what she meant to him.
Chuck’s group attacks Patch as a pack, shoving him and then beating him with punches and kicks. Patch does not try to shield himself and compares the assault to what Eli Aaron once did, which makes this violence seem lesser by comparison. When the boys hesitate after seeing Patch smile through the blood, Patch stands, raises his fists, and dares them to come back for more.
Before the fight can continue, Misty steps in front of Patch and smashes Chuck with a sourdough baguettine. Her aggression and confidence break the group’s momentum, and Chuck and his friends decide to back off and leave. The confrontation ends with Patch, Misty, Chuck, and the watching townspeople all clearly aware of the social lines being crossed in public.
Afterward, Patch quietly gathers the fallen posters and takes out tape. Misty helps hold the posters in place as Patch hangs them back up along the street, showing support for his search instead of letting Chuck erase it. While they work, Misty says her parents want Patch to come to dinner, possibly out of gratitude or guilt, and she gives Patch the bread she made for his lunch; their exchange ends with Patch admitting he never returned the silver cutlery from before.
