Chapter 47
Overview
Grace continues to keep Patch alive emotionally and physically by turning their cell into an imagined world, guiding him through prayer, exercise, and small acts of comfort. Their bond grows more intimate as Patch admits his shame about home and Grace reveals that no one is left searching for her. That bleak revelation hardens the chapter's stakes and pushes Patch to keep secretly loosening a brick, making escape feel more urgent and personal.
Summary
In the cellar, Grace keeps transforming the brick wall into an imagined coastline for Patch. She names ships and seabirds and explains why sunsets turn violet, revealing how much she knows about the world beyond their prison. While Grace talks, Patch keeps digging at the cement groove he has made and quietly works the top brick looser whenever she is gone.
When the captor arrives, Patch scrambles into place and obeys the rule not to turn toward him. The man remains silent, but Patch feels his power and Grace's fear. Grace steadies both of them by reciting scripture, and Patch answers with the practiced verse, showing how their routines have become a survival strategy.
Grace also forces Patch to exercise until his body burns, trying to keep him strong enough to endure captivity. Patch suffers through the pain, then is shocked when Grace slips him Peanut Butter Cups she has somehow obtained. The small gift becomes another sign of Grace's ingenuity and care.
As they sit together, Grace asks Patch what he misses and shares her own list of lost beauty and seasons. Patch admits that sometimes he does not want to go home because people call him a thief, and Grace laughs at his blunt honesty until Patch joins her. Their shared laughter briefly breaks the darkness and deepens their bond.
Later, Patch traces Grace's face with his hand, and Grace asks him to paint her even though he cannot see her. When Patch asks whether anyone is searching for Grace, Grace answers that there is no one left for her outside. After the captor takes Grace away again, Patch returns to the wall with renewed determination, deepens the groove, and keeps working even after tearing a nail loose.
