At her wedding, Saint stands before Jimmy and does her best to smile, speak her vows, and commit herself to the future she has chosen. Near the end of the ceremony, she makes the mistake of looking toward the back of the church and sees Patch sitting alone. As Jimmy leads her down the aisle, Saint looks for Patch again and realizes he has already slipped away.

Outside, in the rain, Saint leaves her new husband and follows Patch down the path. Patch explains that Sammy told him about the wedding. When Saint asks whether Patch will stay for the party, Patch says no, and the two stand together in an awkward mix of intimacy and distance.

Patch asks whether Jimmy treats Saint well. Saint wants to confess her real fears: Jimmy does not want room for her piano, does not appreciate her efforts, dislikes her being a cop, and expects motherhood to replace her independent life. Most of all, Saint wants to admit that she is afraid, but instead she says only that Jimmy treats her well.

Patch embraces Saint, and both finally admit what still remains between them. Saint whispers that she misses Patch, and Patch answers that he misses her every day. Saint says there is so much to say, but Patch tells her that nothing they say will change anything. After wiping away Saint’s tears, they part, and Saint tells Patch to be good before returning to the church.

Back inside, Norma helps Saint compose herself. Jimmy compliments her appearance and lightly asks where she went, and Saint answers that she had to say goodbye to somebody. Saint then moves through the reception, smiling for photographs, greeting guests, and performing the role expected of her. During the first dance, she feels a small relief that Patch left before the celebration continued, and as she sways with Jimmy, she quietly sings along to the song, closing her eyes instead of meeting Jimmy’s.
