Chapter 80
Overview
Patch’s portrait of Grace becomes a tool for the investigation when Sammy and Patch bring it to Chief Nix, who is stunned by its realism and agrees to distribute copies nationwide. The chapter turns Patch’s private obsession into public action, suggesting the painting may help uncover Grace’s identity or fate.
At the same time, Misty breaks through Patch’s isolation by visiting the studio, admiring the painting, and admitting that she misses him. Her visit shifts Patch’s focus away from grief long enough for him to truly see Misty again, reopening an emotional connection he has been avoiding.
Summary
At the police station, Sammy sets Patch’s finished portrait on Chief Nix’s desk and tells him to copy it. Nix is overwhelmed by the painting’s precision; instead of looking imagined, Grace appears so exact and lifelike that the portrait feels almost photographic. When Patch confirms that it is Grace, Nix treats the canvas carefully and begins making copies.
As the copier produces page after page, Patch watches closely and is satisfied that Grace’s image survives the process. Nix makes fifty copies, and Patch pushes for them to be circulated widely, asking that one be sent to police departments in every state. Nix agrees, making this painting more than an act of grief: it becomes a practical attempt to identify or find Grace and move the larger search forward.
Afterward, Patch returns to the gallery and sits with the original portrait, absorbed in Grace’s face and the clarity he has finally achieved after so many attempts. The studio is crowded with the discarded versions of Grace, evidence of months of work, obsession, and Sammy’s costly instruction.
Misty arrives at the doorway, her presence breaking Patch’s trance. Standing among the many failed canvases, Misty admires the final portrait and says Grace is beautiful and deserves to be displayed prominently. As she flips through the near-identical earlier paintings, the scene highlights how relentlessly Patch has pursued Grace’s image and how much of himself he has poured into this task.
Misty then shifts from Grace to Patch, telling him that she sees him at school and misses him. For the first time in a while, Patch truly looks at Misty instead of past her, noticing her with the same artist’s intensity he has reserved for his paintings. Misty gives him an envelope and leaves, and as Patch watches her go, he realizes how deeply he sees her and how impossible it would be to fully capture her, even with every color he owns.
