Chapter 10
Overview
Saint goes to the Meyer house late at night, desperate to speak with Misty and learn more after Patch saved her. Instead, Mr. Meyer blocks her access, saying Misty is asleep and will talk to Chief Nix later. The encounter shows how fear and shock are isolating the Meyers and leaves Saint still searching for answers about Patch and the attack.
Summary
Late at night, Saint rides up through Monta Clare toward the Meyer house, pushing herself hard as she climbs from Main Street into the wealthier part of town. The beauty and abundance around her only sharpen her distress, because Saint is focused on one question: finding Patch and reaching Misty after the attack.
When the hill becomes too steep, Saint abandons her bicycle and walks the final stretch up the Meyers’ driveway. From there she can see the town below and the impressive Meyer home up close, a place everyone in Monta Clare knows. The contrast between the grandeur of the house and what has just happened to Misty makes Saint think less about the family’s status than about what they may have lost.
Before Saint can knock, Mr. Meyer opens the door. He recognizes Saint only as Misty’s friend, and his exhausted, detached manner suggests that the attack has stripped away his confidence and certainty. Saint asks after Misty and tries to speak with her, but Mr. Meyer says Misty is asleep and should speak to Chief Nix after she has rested.
Saint insists because she needs answers, but Mr. Meyer refuses and tells her to go home. Saint reads his response not as authority or composure but as fear. Shut out from Misty and still without news of Patch, Saint leaves with no new information, only a stronger sense of how deeply the attack has shaken the Meyer family and the town.
