Chapter 141
Overview
Patch and Misty finally face the emotional damage left by their shared past during a tense dinner and walk through Monta Clare. Misty reveals that her mother told her what Misty's father had done, forcing Patch to recognize that he took more from the Meyers than money and that their separation was shaped by more than his disappearance. Their exchange ends not in full reconciliation but in a brief, genuine thaw, marking a small emotional turning point for both of them.
Summary
Patch meets Misty for dinner in Monta Clare. Misty is dressed elegantly and greets him with teasing distance by calling him "the bank robber himself." Inside Lacey's Diner, Patch notices both the familiar setting and how much has changed, especially Misty herself, who looks thinner and paler than he remembers.
Over the meal, Misty explains how her life went off course after the past they share. She tells Patch that she dropped out of college because life took unexpected turns, and she says her father died a year earlier while golfing in the Ozarks. Misty describes him as a man whose principles and belief in a greater good were strong even if his heart was not. She has recently moved back to Monta Clare to spend time with her mother and because the town feels slower and more manageable.
After Misty pays the bill and leaves, Patch follows her up Main Street because his guilt will not let the evening end politely. In the street, he apologizes for leaving her. Misty pushes back, asking why he assumes she regrets that night, while Patch privately thinks about how much time, care, and hope she wasted on him while he was consumed by his search for a dead girl.
Misty then reveals the real source of some of her anger: after learning Patch was back in town and meeting her again, her mother told her what Misty's father had done. That admission makes Patch understand that what he took from the Meyers was more than money. Seeing the band on Misty's finger, Patch tries to imagine a settled, happy life for her, but Misty says her life is fine and that her mother's confession was meant to make her finally "see" him clearly.
Misty says she always knew she could not compete, and Patch denies it before making a clumsy joke that briefly breaks the tension. Misty smiles at last and calls him "the boy that saved my life." The conversation does not erase the damage between them, but it ends with a small moment of warmth, suggesting a fragile easing of old bitterness.
