Patch drives Saint through Monta Clare in the rain, and Saint does not ask where he is taking her. As Saint studies him, she senses that something has changed in him even if she cannot see it outwardly. When Patch turns onto the track at Eleven Valley Road, Saint realizes he is bringing her back to Eli Aaron's property.

They walk together past the overgrowth to Lake White Rock and then to the burned remains of Eli Aaron's house. The police are gone, but the damage and the memory of the investigation remain. Standing in the ruins, Patch explains his purpose: if he and Saint want to find Grace, they need to understand how Eli Aaron selected Grace, Misty, and the other victims.

Patch then shows Saint a photograph of the rosary beads, which he secretly took from the police station while cleaning there. Saint studies the detailed beads and asks to keep the picture. Later, Saint searches library archives for information about them, but the clue leads nowhere.

Although the house is destroyed, the barns still stand, and Patch continues searching rather than leaving. Saint follows him into the damaged structure, even though she does not want to be there. As they sift through soaked, ruined books and papers, Saint asks whether Patch believes Eli Aaron is still alive, and Patch says yes, because otherwise Grace would have found him by now.
