Chapter 77
Overview
At the gallery, Sammy confronts Patch over the stolen sketches but unexpectedly decides to help him instead of punishing him. Grateful that Patch saved Misty Meyer, Sammy lends him professional art supplies and a private studio, turning Patch’s fixation on Grace into a disciplined artistic pursuit. The chapter gives Patch a new tool and refuge for his search, while showing that his past act of courage is still changing his future.
Summary
Patch goes to the arches with a program for Swan Lake, thinking about Grace’s life before she disappeared. He reasons that a girl like Grace would have left traces behind her—friends, family, school records, cultural habits—and that her absence must have created a visible void. Nearby, he notices one of his own missing posters, already sun-bleached and fading, which underscores how time is erasing both evidence and public attention.
Before Patch can linger, Sammy pulls him away and takes him into the gallery and then into his office. Sammy has gathered the sketches Patch took from him and questions him about them, mocking Patch’s appearance and rough methods while testing his nerve. Their exchange is sharp and hostile, but Patch stands his ground, and Sammy’s insults gradually shift into a more serious assessment of Patch’s work and intent.
Sammy then begins laying out professional materials and explaining them in detail: fine brushes, high-quality oils, and linen canvas suited for portrait painting. Patch initially does not understand what Sammy is doing and tries to refuse, assuming he is being offered something he cannot accept or repay. Sammy makes clear that the materials are only loaned, not gifted, and that Patch will repay the debt someday, because Sammy believes obligation matters.
Finally, Sammy shows Patch a spare white studio hidden behind a sculpture and sets strict rules for its use: Patch may work there, keep it orderly, and avoid speaking to Sammy or visitors. When Patch asks why Sammy is helping him instead of reporting his theft, Sammy reveals the real reason: Patch saved the Meyer girl, and Sammy has not forgotten it. Tying Patch’s artistic ability directly to his search for Grace, Sammy tells him to find her by painting her—urging Patch to "bring her to life" through art.
