Chapter 35
Overview
Saint's confrontation with Eli Aaron turns into a desperate fight for control as he easily disarms her and keeps her trapped in fear inside the barn. Refusing to give up completely, Saint presses forward into the red-lit storage area and discovers a horrifying sight, deepening the sense of Eli Aaron's power and the scale of what she has entered. The chapter raises the stakes by showing how physically vulnerable Saint is and how much worse the truth may be than she feared.
Summary
After Eli Aaron admits he abducted the missing girls, Saint is seized by overwhelming fear. She feels her body and mind locking up even as instinct tells her to get up and run, and she realizes she may have made the same kind of reckless choice that Patch once made.
On her knees, Saint gropes for her glasses but finds her bag and the Colt instead. She raises the gun into the darkness, but Eli Aaron takes it from her almost effortlessly and slips back out of sight, showing that Saint has lost her strongest protection.
Still trying to fight back, Saint grabs her slingshot and a box of silver steel ball bearings. Her hands shake so badly that she spills many of them before loading one, and she cries as she fires a single shot blindly toward where Eli Aaron might be.
Saint then collects her broken glasses and puts them on, even though her vision is now distorted. When a curtain opens and red light spills in, Saint follows it out of the darkroom and into the main barn, where she finds long aisles of boxes stacked high under the red glow.
She moves cautiously through the aisles, turning into the next row as she searches the space. At the end of that movement, Saint finally looks up and is hit with a shocking sight that leaves her gasping, ending the chapter on a moment of horror and revelation.
