Chapter 118
Overview
Saint investigates a Kansas bank robbery and interviews Dawn, the teller who encountered the robber. Dawn's account and the surveillance tape confirm that the robber was Patch, giving Saint concrete proof that the FBI's bank-robbery trail really leads to him.
The chapter also reveals something important about Patch's state of mind: he staged the robbery but left without taking the money. That contradiction deepens the mystery of what he is doing and underscores Saint's grief as she confronts what Patch has become.
Summary
Saint drives through Kansas to Cottonwood Falls and goes to the First Kansas Bank, following up on one of the robberies linked to the man the FBI believes is Patch. In a back office, Saint meets Dawn, a young teller who handled the robbery and speaks about the robber with flirtatious excitement rather than fear.
As Saint questions her, Dawn explains that the robber came in on a quiet Wednesday morning, announced the robbery, and briefly showed a gun without aggressively threatening her. Dawn remembers his smile, his clothes, and the way he stood out immediately, which makes clear to Saint that this witness has not forgotten him.
Dawn then reveals the detail that matters most: while she was trying to gather money, the robber noticed a family photograph and asked about it. Dawn spoke about the bank, her family, and the struggles of the local farming economy, and the robber listened closely instead of hurrying her or fixating on the cash. Because he listened with unusual attention and gentleness, Dawn decided he seemed decent despite the crime.
The interview takes a crucial turn when Dawn tells Saint that the robber never actually took the money. He left the bills on the counter and walked out, and the incident was only reported because the bank reviewed its security footage. When Saint watches the tape, she sees Patch on the screen and gains direct visual confirmation that he is indeed the robber she has been tracking. The proof lands heavily on Saint, because it confirms both Patch's presence and how strangely conflicted his crimes have become.
