Chapter 76
Overview
In a quiet late-night talk, Misty tries to connect with Patch over what survival has cost them, but Patch refuses the bond she offers. He tells Misty to return to her own world, revealing how deeply grief and class difference have shaped his isolation. The chapter closes off a possible closeness between them and shows Patch choosing loneliness over comfort.
Summary
Misty leads Patch into her family’s vast backyard, where they sit on swings beneath the moonlight. Surrounded by signs of wealth and ease, Patch feels the distance between Misty’s life and his own, even as Misty tries to bridge it by inviting him to watch her perform dressage.
The conversation shifts when Misty asks whether surviving “the afterwards” is hard. Misty recalls seeing her father cry after she was rescued, remembering the moment at the police station and later at home when Dr. T’s medication was supposed to have put her to sleep. By telling Patch this, Misty tries to acknowledge the damage that remains after the rescue.
Patch stays quiet because he believes his part in Misty’s life is already over. He also compares Misty to Grace in his mind, which deepens his grief and sharpens his sense that Misty still belongs to a world that can heal, while Grace is gone.
When Misty asks what she should do, Patch answers bluntly. He tells Misty to return to the privileges and safety of her own life—to “eat lobster” and sit on her swing—because every time Misty notices him, Patch feels reminded that her world has been disturbed by what happened. Patch decides that keeping Misty close would only underline what is broken.
Patch thanks the Meyers and says good night to Misty. As he leaves, Patch understands that after this conversation, Misty will not come sit with him on Monday, and he accepts that he has chosen further isolation.
