Chapter 132
Overview
Saint follows the route she decoded into Arizona, stakes out a bank, and intercepts Patch after another robbery before local police can reach him. Their reunion collapses the boundary between love and duty as Patch reveals he is still chasing a possible lead on Grace, while Saint exposes Jimmy's abuse and then tries to force Patch's surrender. When Saint tells Patch that Tooms said the girl he seeks is dead, Patch runs instead of submitting, and Saint shoots him, turning their long pursuit into direct tragedy.
Summary
A week after tracing Patch's route, Saint follows the trail into Arizona, through the desert near San Xavier del Bac and into San Carlos. She checks into a small hotel opposite a Chase Bank and waits for days, exhausted and haunted by Jimmy's recent violence. Saint keeps Norma at a distance on the phone while she watches for the robbery she expects.
On a Tuesday morning, Saint hears the alarm, runs outside, and reaches the bank before local police. A shaken teller tells Saint that the robber left only minutes earlier in an aging Chevy headed toward the Apache Trail. Because Saint acts immediately, she gets ahead of the police response and chases Patch alone through the mountains and rough road beyond Fish Creek Hill.
Saint finally finds Patch's pickup far from town and confronts him with her gun. Patch is calm and affectionate, tells Saint he believes a woman named Eloise Strike may be his Grace, and explains that his robberies are funding his search for girls others have failed to find. Patch speaks of wanting only one sign that the girl he seeks survived well enough to smile, while Saint insists that she has to arrest him.
When Patch notices Saint's bruised face, Saint admits that Jimmy beat her after she told him she had aborted his baby. Patch comforts her, and Saint briefly lets herself lean on him before forcing herself back into her role as an officer. Saint then tells Patch that Tooms said the girl Patch is chasing is dead and buried in Thurley State Park, hoping the truth will make him surrender. Patch refuses to believe Saint, breaks for his car instead of turning around, and Saint fires her gun at him as he runs.
