Chapter 93
Overview
Rosie prepares for a deadly confrontation when Eddie Flood arrives at her hotel room, believing he has come to finish the job. Instead, Eddie admits his shady ties to Rob Kenna and a violent past, but reveals that his real purpose is absurdly personal: he wants Rosie to read the book he has written.
The chapter sharply reframes Eddie from apparent assassin to socially disastrous would-be author, turning menace into dark comedy while complicating assumptions about his role in the larger plot.
Summary
In her hotel room, Rosie hears a knock and briefly assumes it is the flirtatious room-service boy from earlier. She quickly remembers that she is now living in a world of ambushes and assassins, but when Eddie Flood is at the door, Rosie lets him in because she has little choice and hopes she can either talk him around or leave Steve enough clues to understand what happened.
When Eddie reaches into his bag, Rosie assumes he is pulling a gun and that he has come to kill her. Rosie presses Eddie for one answer before he does it: who hired him. Rosie accuses Eddie of being a hitman, of trying to shoot Amy, and of working for Rob Kenna. Eddie awkwardly admits that he took Rob Kenna's money and says he has killed before, though only "once or twice," but he resists Rosie's label of him as a straightforward contract killer.
The confrontation then swerves in an unexpected direction. Eddie explains that he has been following the group because, once he heard Rosie's name, he wanted the chance to meet her. Instead of producing a weapon, Eddie pulls out a laptop and reveals that he has spent the last few days finishing a book. Eddie apologizes for frightening Rosie and says he is not there to murder her at all; he only wants Rosie to read his manuscript. Rosie reacts with horrified disbelief, deciding that this request is somehow even worse.
