Chapter 95
Overview
Amy proves that Susan Knox, not Jeff or Max Highfield, is Loubet’s inside ally by shooting Jeff non-fatally and watching how Susan reacts. Hidden behind the boardroom mirror, Amy and Jeff hear Susan call François Loubet, ask for more money, and reveal her role in the cover-up.
When Susan then tries to manipulate Amy into killing Jeff, her betrayal becomes complete. The chapter dramatically redirects suspicion, exposes corruption inside Jeff’s own office, and restores trust between Amy and Jeff.
Summary
After shooting Jeff Nolan in the thigh, Amy Wheeler uses her lemon sweatshirt as a tourniquet and keeps him quiet at gunpoint. Instead of taking him away, Amy hides Jeff in Henk’s private den behind the boardroom mirror, where both of them can watch Susan Knox in the boardroom and listen through the speakers. Amy realizes Susan is not really searching for evidence but deleting files.
When Susan makes an urgent call, Amy tightens Jeff’s tourniquet and they listen. Susan calls François Loubet and tells him that Amy suspects Jeff, that Amy has shot Jeff, and that she will manage the situation. Susan argues against killing Jeff, asks for another hundred thousand pounds, and mentions Amy’s father-in-law, confirming that Susan is working with Loubet and has been paid to help cover up the scheme.
Amy explains to Jeff that she did not know for certain it was Susan before shooting him; she only knew the culprit was not Amy or Max Highfield, leaving Jeff or Susan as the likeliest options. Amy says she acted decisively to force a reaction: if Susan had called the police, Amy would have concluded Jeff was guilty, but Susan’s call to Loubet proves Susan’s involvement. Jeff accepts Amy’s logic, even while in pain.
Amy then lays out why Susan should have been more obvious as a suspect. Susan has worked for Jeff for decades on a modest salary but lives in Hampstead, suggesting hidden income. Jeff knows almost nothing personal about her, including her birthday, and treats her more as a function than a person. Amy also notes that Susan scored ninety-six on Jeff’s Psychopath Test, the same as Jeff, while Henk scored very low, reinforcing Amy’s sense that Susan was capable of this level of cold betrayal.
Susan then phones Amy directly and falsely claims she has discovered proof on Jeff’s laptop that he authorized the payments and handled Loubet’s emails. Susan says Jeff killed people for money and pushes Amy toward only one solution: killing him, promising her full support. Amy hangs up, mocks Jeff for never even buying Susan a Christmas present, and the moment ends with dark humor and relief as Jeff jokes that one day he will have to shoot Amy back and the two share a hug.
