Chapter 79
Overview
Over one sleepless night, Steve Wheeler confirms to his own satisfaction that Max Highfield is Joe Blow and decides to fly to Dubai with Rosie D’Antonio, while Jeff Nolan stays behind to investigate under the cover of his supposed death. At the same time, Eddie Flood prepares to trail Rosie, Henk van Veen remains uneasy about Jeff, and Max spends the night in decadent safety in Dubai. The chapter shifts the hunt decisively toward Dubai and positions multiple rivals to converge there while Amy Wheeler stays hidden from the police.
Summary
During a restless night, Steve Wheeler lies awake with Trouble the cat on his chest and thinks through the case. After reading the files and comparing them with what Henk van Veen told him, Steve becomes convinced that Max Highfield is Joe Blow. Max’s connection to Felicity Woollaston and his presence in Dubai, where Rob Kenna is based, make Steve sure the trail now leads there. Because of that conclusion, Steve plans to take an early flight to Dubai with Rosie D’Antonio, while Jeff Nolan stays behind because Loubet may believe Jeff is dead and Jeff can use that to keep investigating.
Rosie cannot sleep in Steve’s spare room because she is half hoping Jeff will come upstairs, though she also feels unusually safe with Steve nearby, Jeff on the sofa, and Henk elsewhere in the village. Rosie runs through recent men in her thoughts and notices, with some pride, that she has not tried to exploit Steve’s emotional vulnerabilities. Downstairs, Jeff also lies awake, sore from his recent time hiding in a ditch and uncomfortable on Steve’s sofa. Jeff thinks ahead to returning to London, and he reflects on Steve’s idea of sending Loubet a blunt email about Dubai, Max Highfield, and Rob Kenna in order to force the conspirators into the open.
Henk, unable to settle at Tony Taylor’s house, walks through the village at night and sits on a memorial bench for Debbie. As Henk thinks about Max Highfield’s involvement, Henk still does not fully trust Jeff, but Henk also starts wondering whether their damaged partnership could be repaired. Elsewhere, Bonnie Gregor briefly loses sleep over whether she should admit at an airport that she did not pack her own bags, then decides the obvious answer is safest. Eddie Flood, meanwhile, repeatedly checks that his 5 a.m. alarm is set correctly, because Eddie is determined to follow Rosie wherever she goes the next day.
In Dubai, Max Highfield is still wide awake at four in the morning, partying in a private room at Ekwinox Night Club with wealthy and famous companions while taking cocaine. Max assumes his status protects him, and he enjoys the fantasy of becoming a celebrity as well as remaining rich. Henk has assigned Max a very small female bodyguard, underscoring that Max is being watched and protected even while he indulges himself.
By contrast, Amy Wheeler sleeps soundly in the guest wing of Gary Gough’s country house, where she is as hidden from the police as possible. Her rest underlines a temporary pause rather than safety: Amy knows more work is coming, and she trusts that she, Steve, and Rosie will each handle their part. The night therefore ends with the main players scattered, sleepless, and moving toward the next stage of the conflict.
