Chapter 45
Overview
In St Lucia, Steve's grief over Debbie comes to the surface as he realizes the life and freedom he denied both of them, even while he tries to keep working the case. The chapter also sharpens his suspicions around Vivid Viral and Henk, suggesting the conspiracy is still larger than Francois's confession explained. Rosie's intervention matters because she pushes Steve to confront the fear and rigid routines that have shaped his life just before the dangerous meeting with Nelson Nunez.
Summary
In his lavish suite in St Lucia, Steve records a message to Debbie on his Dictaphone. Surrounded by the kind of Caribbean luxury Debbie once wanted, Steve is overwhelmed by regret that he never brought her there while she was alive. He tries to joke about the trip and tomorrow's plan to meet Nelson Nunez, but his grief and self-reproach keep breaking through.
Steve then turns from mourning to the investigation. He reviews the growing connection between Bella Sanchez, Andrew Fairbanks's bag of money, and the same red-haired driver, which confirms for Steve that the deaths and cash movements are linked. He also decides that the renamed Vivid Viral agency remains the most suspicious part of the case, and he notes Henk's conveniently timed new security business as another reason for suspicion.
A hotel worker arrives with a suit sent by Rosie for dinner with the owner of Emerald Bay and for the meeting with Nelson Nunez the next day. Steve dislikes both the formal clothes and the idea of sushi, and after the interruption he thinks of asking Tony Taylor to investigate in Letchworth because Steve may be stuck abroad longer than expected. Alone again, Steve imagines Debbie beside him and briefly thinks that if tomorrow turns violent, dying might not be the worst outcome, revealing how deeply his guilt and sorrow are affecting him.
Rosie then comes to Steve's room and immediately sees that he has been crying. When Steve challenges the suit, Rosie teases him, then pointedly questions his attachment to routine, home, safety, and control. Her remarks force Steve to recognize how narrow his life has become and to wonder how Debbie and Amy have judged that fearfulness. Rosie finally invites Steve to walk with her on the beach, talk about murder, and talk about Debbie, and Steve agrees.
