Chapter 89
Overview
Amy, Jeff, and Susan uncover records showing that Max Highfield referred thirty-five Vivid Viral-linked clients to Maximum Impact for payment, confirming his long-term role in the scheme. But instead of clarifying François Loubet’s part, the evidence prompts Jeff to accuse Amy of having helped Max by providing access to clients through her protection work. The chapter sharply shifts the case from external pursuit to suspicion falling on Amy herself.
Summary
At dawn in a secure City of London boardroom, Amy Wheeler meets Jeff Nolan and Susan Knox, Jeff’s head of HR, to review newly uncovered paperwork. Susan confirms that thirty-five Maximum Impact clients had all previously worked for Vivid Viral and had all been introduced by Max Highfield, who received a ten-thousand-pound payment for each referral. The file goes back more than two years and includes Courtney Lewis, linking Max directly to the pattern Amy has been investigating.
Amy and Jeff hope the documents might reveal where those clients travelled and help them get closer to François Loubet. Susan explains that the people in the file were low-value clients who could not afford full protection on trips, which is why they were selected, and that the paperwork contains only names, numbers, and addresses. Because the operational details seem to have stayed with Vivid Viral, the file proves Max’s involvement but does not identify Loubet’s movements.
Jeff then shifts the discussion by saying Max could not have managed the scheme alone. Amy reacts with disbelief, but Jeff looks to Susan and then points Amy toward the implication. Jeff notes that the first name on the list was introduced three days after Max returned from San Francisco, where Amy had been Jeff’s close-protection officer.
Jeff adds that the second name on the list was introduced on a day when Amy was working for François Loubet. By matching Amy’s assignments to the timing of Max’s referrals, Jeff accuses Amy of being the person who helped Max identify targets. Amy denies it immediately, but the chapter ends with Jeff insisting that Amy already knows what happened, turning the investigation into a direct accusation against her.
