Chapter 90
Overview
Steve approaches Mickey Moody in a sauna, hoping Rob Kenna’s golf partner can provide a useful opening, but Mickey proves too wary to offer direct help. Still, Mickey’s cynical view of Dubai’s criminal social world confirms the danger around Rob and the people connected to him.
More importantly, a conversation about their dead wives triggers a breakthrough for Steve: he suddenly recognizes who François Loubet is and believes he now understands the scheme more clearly. That realization gives Steve a major new lead to take back to Amy and Rosie.
Summary
Steve goes into a sauna at a Dubai golf club because he wants a friendly route to Rob Kenna, and Mickey Moody, a big Cockney golfer Steve saw with Rob the previous day, seems like the best possible introduction. Steve awkwardly starts a conversation, pretending he is a Bermondsey man in the scented-candle business who simply loves saunas, even though Steve is clearly uncomfortable and still wearing clothes and shoes.
Steve steers the talk toward Rob Kenna, but Mickey Moody refuses to say much. Mickey explains that after years in the scrap business he learned not to ask questions about rich, shady men, because people with flashy money often end up arrested, shot, or dead. Mickey describes Dubai as a place full of people who may or may not be legitimate, and he groups Rob with a long line of men who appear successful for a while and then suddenly vanish.
While listening, Steve thinks through his real problem: he needs an apparently accidental introduction to Rob Kenna, but Mickey Moody may be too cautious and experienced to manipulate easily. The conversation then turns personal when Steve asks about Mickey Moody’s wife and learns she died of cancer five years earlier. Steve admits that his own wife is also dead, and both men reveal that they still talk to their wives regularly.
Mickey Moody says he had been speaking to his wife in the sauna before Steve arrived, and Steve realizes he is not alone in treating those conversations as real. That recognition helps Steve trust the voice of Debbie in his head when it suddenly points him toward François Loubet. Steve understands that he now knows who François Loubet is and, with it, what has been happening, even if he still needs more evidence. Excited to report the breakthrough to Rosie and Amy, Steve celebrates by finally taking off his shoes and socks in the sauna.
