Chapter 99

Overview

In a light epilogue scene, Jeff and Henk reunite with Max Highfield over dinner and slip back into their familiar partnership. As Max boasts about Susan Knox's exposure and his future film role, the conversation quietly suggests that the death threats troubling him may have come from inside his own circle. The chapter closes by showing that, after the case, old alliances and old tricks have resumed.

Summary

At The Wilberforce restaurant, Jeff and Henk immediately fall back into their old rhythm by arguing over whether monkfish should be paired with red or white wine. While they bicker, the porter comments on Max Highfield's new calfskin shoes, establishing the relaxed, comic tone of the meeting.

Once the porter steps away, Max asks whether Jeff and Henk are working together again. Henk says they are, explaining that mutual suspicion had briefly divided them. Max then reminds them that he caught Susan Knox, and although Jeff and Henk acknowledge that Susan used Max's name to conceal her own actions, they indulge Max's self-congratulatory version of events.

When Henk starts to note that Amy Wheeler was really the one who caught Susan, Jeff cuts him off, and both men encourage Max to continue talking. Max boasts that Susan also used the name "Joe Blow," and the group treats the reference as another odd detail from the case. Max then adds that he is going to appear in Rosie D'Antonio's film about money smuggling, amused that the movie resembles the real events.

Max says that the only remaining mystery is who has been sending him death threats. Jeff casually remarks that Henk used to send such threats to new clients in order to frighten them into paying more, which casts the threats in a more dubious light. Max says no new threats have arrived recently, and Henk simply shrugs at Jeff, who smiles, implying that the matter may not be as mysterious as Max believes.

The porter returns having chosen a rosé for them, neatly ending the red-versus-white argument. Jeff and Henk answer in unison, and the chapter closes on the suggestion that their partnership with Max has been restored, with old habits and old dynamics fully back in place.
