Amy hides in the boot of Gary Gough’s Land Rover while Gary drives her from Axley to London. Police are searching Axley and the surrounding villages for Amy, so staying concealed is the safest option. Gary treats the trip as no trouble, partly because he already has criminal business in London.

Even after they reach the motorway, Amy stays in the boot because it feels secure. She reflects that whatever evidence has been planted at the three murder scenes will probably make her look guilty, so lying low is necessary. Amy feels uneasy about sending Steve and Rosie to Dubai without her, but she believes their best chance is to identify François Loubet and stop him.

Gary plans to leave Amy in the underground car park at Maximum Impact, where she will hide overnight. The next day, Amy and Jeff intend to go through the François Loubet files in detail, even though neither of them is naturally good with paperwork. Amy discovers a metal case containing two handguns in the boot, asks Gary if she can take one, and feels safer once she has extra protection.
