Chapter 72
Overview
Eddie secretly follows Amy, Rosie, and Steve to England and installs himself at The Pig in the New Forest as he prepares to carry out a hit. Eddie is close to acting but hesitates over whether a shot through glass will work. When Eddie unexpectedly sees Rosie dining in the hotel, the threat becomes immediate and his plan suddenly looks far easier to execute.
Summary
Eddie learns, through a bribe at the airfield, that Amy, Rosie, and Steve have flown to England and landed somewhere in the New Forest. Rather than report this to Rob Kenna, Eddie follows them on his own because Amy is no longer his responsibility and Eddie wants to focus on his own assignment.
Using most of the fifteen thousand pounds he still has from Rob, Eddie books himself into The Pig, a secluded hotel that suits his needs. Eddie treats the hotel as a temporary base while he prepares to carry out a killing, but Eddie is still uncertain about one practical detail that could determine success or failure.
Eddie knows he will get only one chance, so Eddie keeps turning over a final question in his mind: whether a bullet can pass cleanly through a pane of glass in a high building or whether the glass would deflect it. That uncertainty delays action, even as Eddie tries to settle himself and wait for the right moment.
When Eddie goes down toward the dining room, Eddie unexpectedly spots Rosie D'Antonio seated at a window table, talking to an older man. The sight shocks Eddie into retreating quietly back up the stairs so that Rosie does not see him.
Rosie's presence at the hotel immediately changes Eddie's calculations. Eddie realizes that if Rosie is staying at The Pig, his job may become much easier, so Eddie withdraws to order room service and refine his plan.
