His shot drifts toward danger but stays clear of the trees, and Rob reflects that he prefers playing with company. He looks forward to Nelson Nunez arriving the next day for golf and business.

As Rob walks to his ball, his thoughts turn to François Loubet. Rob decides he needs to cut ties with Loubet because Loubet keeps himself too hidden, and Rob believes real business requires direct contact so he can protect himself. The thought matters because Rob is already considering distancing himself from a dangerous associate before anyone else can move against him.

Rob notices that his caddie is acting strangely, especially when she starts whistling. That unsettles him because she normally does not behave that way, and Rob knows she is not just a caddie: she came to him through criminal contacts, has traveled for him, and is the one person he trusts to meet his targets. Her odd behavior signals that something is wrong before Rob fully understands the danger.

While Rob sets up for his next shot, he hears a rustle in the trees and assumes it is only stray cats. Instead, gunfire erupts from the woods and the first shot hits Rob in the chest. Rob drops his club and falls back in shock as more shots follow, and he realizes someone has ambushed him.

As Rob collapses, his caddie runs away across the course. A figure then emerges from the bushes carrying a shotgun, and Rob finally sees François Loubet face to face. Just after Rob has the direct encounter he wanted, Loubet delivers the final shot and kills him.
