Chapter 70
Overview
Rob realizes that Courtney Lewis’s prison murder likely means Frane7ois Loubet is panicking and eliminating risks, which forces Rob to confront that he may be expendable too. Convinced that Amy, Rosie, and Steve are getting too close, Rob decides to stop relying on others and prepare to kill Amy himself. His plan to track Rosie through social media shows that the threat to Amy is becoming more direct, personal, and immediate.
Summary
In Dubai, Rob reflects on how easy prison murders are and revisits the killing of Courtney Lewis, a young woman caught with what he assumes was Frane7ois Loubet’s money. That murder makes Rob suspect that Loubet is panicking and silencing anyone who might expose the operation. As Rob follows that thought, he realizes that he himself may be only one more expendable layer in Loubet’s protection system.
Rob then tries to identify who has made Loubet nervous. He concludes that Amy Wheeler is the obvious threat because she is at the center of the case, and he adds Rosie D’Antonio and the older ex-cop traveling with Amy to the danger list. Rob reasons that if Amy, Rosie, and Steve have started putting the pieces together and might come to Dubai, that could explain why Courtney Lewis had to die.
Because Eddie is no longer in the picture and the danger feels closer to Rob personally, Rob decides it may be time to kill Amy Wheeler himself rather than rely on others. When Mickey Moody returns with drinks, Rob tests whether Mickey might help by watching the airport for Amy. Mickey refuses even after Rob raises the price, making clear that he does not want any part of Rob’s criminal world.
After that conversation, Rob reflects on the kind of life he chose. He thinks about people who stayed honest, contrasts them with men like Eddie who drift in and out for money, and accepts that he is committed to violence for life. Instead of panicking, Rob settles on a practical plan: because Amy is traveling with the famous Rosie D’Antonio, he can track them through social-media sightings. As soon as Rosie appears in a public selfie, Rob intends to move against Amy, and possibly Steve too, while keeping one eye on the larger danger posed by Loubet.
