Chapter 101
Overview
Back in Axley, Amy decides to leave assassination behind and build a detective agency devoted to murders that others cannot or will not solve. Rosie invests in the venture, and Steve, after initially clinging to his quiet life with Debbie's memory, chooses to join after realizing Debbie would want him to keep living.
The chapter turns the aftermath of the conspiracy into a new beginning: the trio forms a partnership, receives its first lead in Turkmenistan, and gives the company its defining name, We Solve Murders.
Summary
At 3 a.m. in Axley, Steve Wheeler sits on his bench by the village pond with Amy Wheeler and Rosie D'Antonio. The mood is calm after the recent danger, and the conversation turns to what comes next now that Mickey Moody and Susan Knox have been arrested. Amy says Jeff and Henk have offered her time off, but she wants more than a break: Amy wants to stop being an assassin and start a detective agency focused on murders that official systems have failed to solve, especially cases involving people who cannot protect themselves.
Steve questions the practicalities, but Amy already has funding in mind. Rosie then turns the discussion into a negotiation, outbidding Amy's unnamed original investor until Amy accepts Rosie's offer of one million dollars for fifteen percent of the company. Amy then reveals that Rosie herself had made the earlier offer on the flight home from St Lucia, and Rosie admits she had been too intoxicated to remember. The exchange confirms that Amy is serious about the new venture and that Rosie intends to stay involved.
Amy next tells Steve that she wants him as her business partner. Steve resists because he believes his life is rooted in Axley: his small local detective work, his routines, his friends, the village quiz, Trouble the cat, and especially his nightly habit of talking to his dead wife Debbie at the bench. Amy urges Steve to ask Debbie what she thinks, so Amy and Rosie walk away and leave Steve alone with his Dictaphone.
Speaking to Debbie, Steve explains why he thinks Amy's plan is impossible for him. Yet as he talks, Steve reaches an emotional turning point. He feels Debbie's presence and becomes certain he understands what she would want: not for Steve to remain frozen in grief, but to keep living because Debbie no longer can. When Amy and Rosie return, Steve first jokes about Debbie's answer, then admits Debbie told him to live, and he agrees to become Amy's partner.
The decision immediately gains urgency. Amy reveals that Henk has already texted about a possible new case: a murdered news presenter and a suspected cover-up in Turkmenistan. Rosie offers the jet, and the three begin imagining their future company. After Amy proposes a flashy name, Steve insists the name should simply describe what they do. He settles on We Solve Murders, and Amy and Rosie accept it, launching the trio's next chapter together.
