Chapter 20
Overview
Jeff goes on the run and leaves Amy a final voicemail before destroying his phone. In the message, Jeff reveals that Francois Loubet has been using Maximum Impact clients to smuggle money, that Loubet threatened to kill him, and that someone connected to Maximum Impact is helping him under the name "Joe Blow." The chapter raises the stakes by isolating Jeff and Amy further and confirming that the conspiracy reaches into people they know.
Summary
Jeff speeds along back roads to avoid cameras, already focused on disappearing. Before cutting himself off, Jeff makes one last attempt to contact Amy because he believes she needs urgent information.
When Amy does not answer, Jeff leaves a voicemail explaining that Francois Loubet has been using Maximum Impact clients to smuggle money. Jeff says he confronted Loubet about it, and that confrontation led to Loubet threatening to kill Jeff. Jeff also reports that two gunmen tried to kill him at Bruno's, which convinces Jeff that the danger is immediate and serious.
Jeff tells Amy that he is going completely off-grid and urges Amy to do the same. Jeff admits he does not understand Amy's exact role in the situation, but says it looks as though Amy is involved and therefore at risk. Jeff warns that Loubet is working with someone they know, connected to Maximum Impact, under the name "Joe Blow," and tells Amy to trust no one, get rid of her phone, and investigate carefully if she can. After ending the call, Jeff destroys his SIM card, throws away both the SIM and the phone, and drives on toward safety.
